About preparation and the fomate of question paper.

An inherent problem in the way most students solve problems is that they are usually satisfied with the first solution they find. Although this mechanism might be good enough for most life situations, it could prove insufficient in solving a GMAT exam.

Most solvers work their way through a question as fast as they can. When they find an answer that is one of the 5 answers appearing in the question they feel a sense of satisfaction and hence tend to forget to check their answer. The GMAT writers know that and make sure that in every question (where it is possible) a second best answer choice appears. This second best answer choice is the most common mistake made by test takers.

Checking your answer in the usual way -going back to the beginning- is a heavy time consumer, and it is usually quite problematic, since most of us are relatively “blind” to our own mistakes (as you probably already know from your own tests experience). Thus, different ways of checking are recommended;

1. Is this what I was looking for? A common mistake is to do everything right and get the right numbers, but not to answer the question you’ve been asked about.

2. Is the solution reasonable? Dedicate 2 seconds in order to check whether the answer you’ve reached is reasonable.

3. Plugging the answer you’ve reached in the first equation used. This step is intended to make sure the answer fits the data given in the question.

When taking time to review your answers, you give up precious time that might have helped you solve 2-4 additional questions.

Therefore we have 3 recommendations for you:

1. Focus on the first two ways that are mentioned above. These two methods are very quick to implement, and can help you avoid many of your mistakes.

2. Take the time to review the first 12-15 questions of each section. Use all three ways mentioned above in order to do so.

3. Practice it! Don’t wait until the GMAT exam itself to review your questions! You must be skilful enough with these methods so that the benefit will be greater than the cost (the lost time…).

Therefore, every simulation that you take must be treated as if it was the real GMAT exam, including the review.

If you are really serious to get admission in a reputed school, you need to remember that amongst many other selecting criteria your application plays a major role. Hence, you must write a compelling application letting the admissions officers know your strong points. It should reflect all your positive qualities like abilities, personality, background, hobbies, past performance, achievements etc.

Second, download the applications you need without wasting time. You should get familiar with your college applications and their requirements during the spring of your junior year. It is advisable that in this period you start gathering the necessary information and make a list of activities and honors.

Try to submit your application as early as possible because admissions officers get stuck in reading nearly 100 applications a day towards the close of the deadline, but early in the season, they read only a handful of essays every day. The more time they spend in considering your application in a thoughtful way, the better becomes your chance of getting an admission. Besides, an early submission indicates that you are serious about your interest in the school.

Though it is true that many schools want to see that you spend your spare time constructively, mentioning a long list of extracurricular activities in your application in order to impress the admission officers is not necessary. Mentioning your achievement in a particular activity you do every day, say per an hour, may impress the officers than mentioning relatively long hours of time in doing something where you achieve nothing. Under extracurricular activities, highlight qualities like your dedication and loyalty, well-roundedness, social awareness and sophistication, leadership capacity etc.

When it is expected that as a student you won’t have a lengthy resume, providing details like your experience in having a job in high school and the number of hours you used to spare on it per day may impress the officers as well. Your job need not be unusual but what matters is your dedication.

Be very careful about your application! Always save a copy of your essays on your hard drive if you are applying online; and also a back up copy on CD or other removable drive. Don’t hurry and try to give your best shot to present an impressive application.

When studying for the GMAT, make sure you use a study material which teaches you both the principles and the methods – not just the methods. Learning the methods alone will take much longer and will not lead to a solid understanding of what the question is based on. When you only know methods, small changes in a familiar question can render it impossible to solve. Knowing the principal will lead to a solid understanding of how to address each question type and what methods will be the most efficient ones to use.

I take the test October 6th. I’ve been studying for about the past 2 1/2 months. I’ve used Princeton Review, Kaplan, Manhattan Review and the Official GMAT study guide so far. I’m super familiar with the test and have done tons of practice questions in the books. The only thing I haven’t done a lot of is online practice tests, of which I’ve taken one. I have access to a ton, but I feel I learn better from the books. I don’t have any time issues and understand how the test will work, so should I worry about taking the extra practice tests or keep working in the books? Like I said, I think I learn more from the books, but I’ve heard taking practice tests is really important. I’m running out of time, so I’m not sure how I should proceed.
